BioMed was an essay competition focused on scientific themes for high school and university students, aimed at stimulating creativity and fostering interest in the fields of life sciences (molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, microbiology), medicine, and biomedical engineering. The competition encouraged participants to explore innovative solutions that could make a tangible impact on human health and well-being.
The competition presented two thought-provoking themes:
a) Improving Human Life: Participants explored innovative approaches to health tracking, well-being, and integration into the concept of smart homes/smart cities. For example, they designed systems for monitoring airborne allergens in response to meteorological phenomena, contributing to healthier living environments.
b) Solving Health-Related Problems: Participants addressed significant health issues through innovative technology. An example was the creation of a biosensor for early detection of a stroke, which could potentially save lives by enabling quicker medical intervention.
BiomentorHub came to your aid with a special online event before the competition: Tips & Tricks for a Successful Presentation at the FameLab Regional Selections, featuring former participants and winners from previous editions!
Before the auditions, we organized an event (April 3rd, 12:00 PM) to support future participants, where FameLab speakers from previous years shared their experiences and answered questions to help you improve your presentation. This event has already taken place and proved to be a valuable opportunity for participants to refine their skills ahead of the selections.
The second edition of the BioMed essay competition focused on scientific themes for undergraduate and master's students, as well as high school pupils, with the aim of stimulating creativity, fostering interest in the fields of life sciences (molecular biology, biophysics, biochemistry, microbiology), biomedical engineering, and medicine, while also developing scientific communication skills.
Participation in this competition involved writing an essay of approximately one and a half A4 pages, in which participants were asked to anticipate the possible evolution of methods, technologies, tools, or materials, and imagine new applications for the following themes:
a) Bio-inspired systems – Nature as a source of innovation: This theme focused on explaining a biological mechanism from the physiology of plants, animals, or humans and translating it into a product that offers a solution to a problem caused by a biological factor, in one of the following fields: human health or environmental protection.
b) HealthAI: The industrial revolution of our century: This theme invited participants to imagine a future product based on artificial intelligence or electrical engineering that provides a solution to a problem caused by a biological factor, in one of the following fields: human health or environmental protection.
Over 100 students and young researchers from Romania had the opportunity to train their communication skills this spring as part of the Games of Science, an original science communication training and competition format developed by Ada Roseti. The Games of Science sessions were organized by the British Council Romania in collaboration with the BiomentorHub Association, as part of the Science for All project, funded under the CIVIS OPEN LAB-UB program at the University of Bucharest, with support from university partners.
The first three editions of BMH Magazine have successfully highlighted the latest developments in life sciences and medicine. The first edition, published in February 2022, focused on introducing the magazine and setting the tone for future discussions. The second edition, released in May 2022, deepened exploration into cutting-edge research. By the third edition in September 2022, the magazine had expanded its reach, featuring articles from experts in various scientific fields. These editions have played a key role in promoting science communication and fostering innovation.

Romanian researchers who went abroad to specialize and develop their careers are now joining forces to build a community of bio and medtech entrepreneurs back home.
Michael Mărgineanu is a researcher at the Francis Crick Institute in London. He has built a career in research, focusing on cancer neuroscience — an emerging niche field.
Biomentorhub Association launched the first issue of BMH Magazine, a Romanian-language publication aiming to open the doors of discovery to all those interested in biosciences and medicine, while contributing to scientific education.
