Prof. Dr. Szilágyi Tibor

University professor of Physiology at the University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology “George Emil Palade” in Târgu Mureș.

After graduating as a doctor, I worked and studied under the guidance of Árpád Párducz at the Biological Research Center of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, in the Laboratory of Molecular Neurobiology (1992-1993). During this time, I learned electron microscopy and wrote EM image processing programs. After 1994 I was a researcher at the MRC Anatomical Neuropharmacology Unit, Oxford University. Under the guidance of Professors Péter Somogyi and Eberhard Buhl, I was involved in the experimental study of synaptic interactions in the hippocampus and neocortex.

Under the guidance of Erik De Schutter, from the Laboratory of Theoretical Neurobiology, University of Antwerp, we modelled the postsynaptic currents evoked by different types of hippocampal inhibitory interneurons. In Tg.Mureș I studied the physiology of the heart and the nervous system. I am a founding member of the National Society of Neuroscience and I am constantly trying to establish a competitive neuroscience community in Romania.
